How Spell Slots Work in 5e

Spell slots are the fuel for casting: each spell you cast of 1st level or higher consumes one slot of that spell’s level or higher. A 5th-level wizard, for example, has four 1st-level, three 2nd-level, and two 3rd-level slots per day. Casting a spell using a higher-level slot often makes it stronger — a fireball cast with a 4th-level slot deals an extra die of damage. Cantrips never consume slots, so you always have something to do on your turn. Most classes recover all slots on a long rest.

Warlocks and Pact Magic

Warlocks play by different rules: they get fewer slots, but every slot is the same level and all of them come back on a short rest, not just a long one. The tracker handles pact magic separately so a multiclassed warlock can track both slot pools correctly at the same time.
