5e or 5.5e: Choosing Your Edition

The 2024 Player's Handbook (often called 5.5e) revised hundreds of spells: healing spells like cure wounds heal more, conjure spells were redesigned, and some were renamed — feeblemind became befuddlement, branding smite became shining smite. The switch at the top of the compendium shows one edition at a time, so you never mix versions of the same spell, and your choice is remembered for next time. The 5.5e view also includes the spells from Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything that the 2024 book didn't reprint, since those remain compatible at 5.5e tables; they're labeled so you can tell them apart.

The Eight Schools of Magic

Every spell in both editions belongs to one of eight schools. Abjuration protects and wards; conjuration summons creatures and objects; divination reveals information; enchantment influences minds; evocation channels raw energy for damage and healing; illusion deceives the senses; necromancy manipulates life and death; and transmutation changes the properties of creatures and things. Filtering by school is a quick way to match spell choices to your character concept.

Spell Levels, Rituals, and Concentration

Spells range from cantrips (level 0, castable at will) up to 9th-level world-shakers like wish. A spell marked as a ritual can be cast without using a spell slot by taking ten extra minutes — great for utility magic like detect magic or identify. Concentration spells stay active only while you maintain focus: you can only concentrate on one at a time, and taking damage forces a saving throw to keep it. The compendium badges rituals and concentration spells so these rules never catch you off guard.

Finding Spells for Your Class

Each class draws from its own spell list — wizards boast the largest and most versatile, clerics and druids prepare from their full list daily, and sorcerers, bards, and warlocks know a fixed selection. Use the class filter to see exactly which spells your character can learn, then follow any spell through to its detail page for the complete rules text.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many spells are in the compendium?

More than 900: 520 D&D 5e (2014) spells and all 391 spells from the 5.5e (2024) Player's Handbook. Every spell has a detail page with casting time, range, components, duration, and classes. Full rules text is included for 5e spells and for every 5.5e spell in the free rules; the remaining 2024 spells list their stats and link to the Player's Handbook for the text.

Does the compendium have the 2024 (5.5e) spells?

Yes. Use the 5e / 5.5e switch above the filters. The 5.5e view has every spell in the 2024 Player's Handbook, plus the Xanathar's and Tasha's spells that weren't reprinted and still work with the new rules.

Can I filter spells by class?

Yes — filter by any class to see its available spells, and combine that with level and school filters or a name search to narrow things down fast.

What do the ritual and concentration badges mean?

Ritual spells can be cast without a spell slot by adding ten minutes to the casting time. Concentration spells remain active only while you maintain concentration, and you can only concentrate on one spell at a time.

Is the spell compendium free?

Yes, completely free with no account required — search, filter, and read every spell.
